DIRECTIONS

to Millport and the Isle of Cumbrae

 

The Isle of Cumbrae (Greater Cumbrae) is situated in the Firth of Clyde off the coast of Largs.

Largs is approximately 25 miles west of Glasgow.

 

BY CAR From Glasgow:

Stay on the M8 heading west for Glasgow Airport.  

 

As you approach the airport you will see directions signs A737 to Irvine and take that road at Junction 29.

 

Follow the A737 for about 7 miles, then take a right on to the A760 (direction Kilbirnie and Largs).

 

Drive through Kilbirnie still on the A760 to Largs.  As you leave Kilbirnie, the road climbs up to the beautiful Haylie Brae, passing the Camphill reservoir.

 

As you come off the Haylie Brae (still the A760), the road descends to the traffic lights.  Turn right to Largs (this is now the A78 direction Greenock).

 

Drive for about 0.5 mile, past the Petrol station on the right and Kwikfit on the left and immediately turn left (signposted with a ferry sign).

 

Follow the road, which bends to the right (becomes Bath Street) and hugs the seafront.  Turn left into Fort Street following the Ferry sign (just after the Church on the right) and join the queue for the car ferry.

 

Buy your ticket for car and passengers at the Largs Ferry Terminal (note you hand in the tickets as you board, there is no ticket for coming back as the return is already included in the price and returning from Cumbrae you just board the ferry).

 

The ferry is a relaxing short 10 minute trip.

 

As you disembark, turn left to Millport.  Don’t worry if you have turned right, as you will still get to Millport! It is a slightly longer journey and the island is in encircled by a 10.5 mile coastal road.  After 3 miles, you will enter Millport.  Keep driving through Millport until you get to the harbour and look for somewhere to park.

 

BY TRAIN From Glasgow:

Glasgow Central to Largs (1 hour).  The Largs Ferry Terminal is a very short walk from the station.  Buy your tickets and then when you get to Cumbrae take the bus which meets the ferry.  Get off at the Harbour (last stop).

 

BY PLANE either from Glasgow Prestwick or Glasgow International

PRESTWICK: take the train from the airport station to Kilwinning (note you will get a discount if you have used a low cost airline) change at Kilwinning for the train to Largs.

 

GLASGOW INTERNATIONAL: take the bus to Paisley Gilmour Street (quicker) and then the direct train to Largs.  Or take the bus to Glasgow and go from Glasgow Central (longer and more expensive)

 

CARHIRE: from Prestwick follow signs for A78 to Largs/Greenock.

From Glasgow, follow the directions by car above.
